Waxx est un musicien français connu pour ses excellentes reprises sur Youtube. Le 27 mars dernier, il a eu la chance de collaborer avec Mike et Chester sur le titre « Heavy ». Il revient avec nous sur cette extraordinaire expérience.
Comment Linkin Park t’a-t-il contacté ? Comment ont-ils découvert tes vidéos ?
Alors en fait Mike et Chester regardent apparemment beaucoup de choses qui se passent sur le web et seraient tombés sur ma chaîne. Leur manager a donc contacté Youtube qui les a mis en relation avec Youtube France. Ils devaient penser que j'étais américain, vu que je ne parle pas dans mes vidéos. Youtube m'a alors envoyé un mail un samedi matin pour m'annoncer qu'ils seraient en France le lundi et qu'ils aimeraient faire une version de leur dernier single avec moi.

Quelle a été ta réaction ? Que représente Linkin Park pour toi ?
Linkin Park est un groupe que j'ai écouté quand j'étais ado. J'étais très fan de leur approche très futuriste de la programmation à l'époque pour un groupe de Rock. Je suis toujours un grand fan de Reanimation. C'était pour moi un honneur d'être appelé par un groupe de cette envergure.

Tu n’avais que 48 heures pour préparer la collaboration, comment as-tu fait pour être prêt en si peu de temps ?
48h pendant un week-end surtout ! Je n'avais pas le temps de retravailler complètement un arrangement et surtout nous n'avions que 45 minutes le jour J pour faire la vidéo. Je me suis donc posé très très peu de question, j'ai fait un arrangement très spontané. Je voulais que ça se transforme en "instantané". Une version qui n'existerait pas ailleurs et qui resterait sobre.

Comment s’est passée la rencontre avec Chester et Mike ?
Nous avons plus discuté que joué. J'étais assez surpris de voir qu'ils avaient vu quasiment toute mes vidéos. J'ai été très surpris de voir des gens aussi humbles, et aussi cools. Nous avons parlé musique, internet et concerts. Un très bon moment !

Comment s'est passé le tournage ? Vous avez eu peu de temps pour tourner.
Le manque de temps était un challenge. Toute la pression de la vidéo a disparu quand ils ont entendu les arrangements que je voulais faire. Ils se sont regardés, ont rigolé et m'ont dit " This is Just awesome men !! You did that in less than 48h hours ??". J'étais tellement saucé de les voir contents que ça nous a donné une force incroyable. Nous avons répété une fois le morceau puis nous avons shooté la vidéo. Il n'y a eu qu'une prise. C'était magique !

Mike et Chester se sont-ils adaptés facilement à ton instrumentale évolutive ?
Ils sont incroyablement talentueux et ont beaucoup d'expérience. En 3 minutes ils avaient tout compris. Il n'y a eu aucun problème. C'était assez dingue.

Quel a été le retour des fans ?
Je pense que le fait qu'un petit frenchy fasse un duo avec un groupe aussi mythique a fait de l’ombre sur le reste. Les gens qui me suivent étaient, j'ai l'impression, assez fiers et contents pour moi. Le reste ...

Quelles retombées a eu la vidéo ? As-tu eu d’autres propositions de collaboration ?
J'ai eu en effet pas mal de proposition derrière tout ça. Mais encore une fois, je fais cette chaîne uniquement pour mon plaisir personnel. Je n'ai signé cette chaîne chez aucun Network. Je ne monétise pas mes vidéos. Je ne fais que du coup de cœur et des vidéos avec mes amis artistes. C'est une cour de récréation et j'aimerais que ça reste comme ça.

Avec du recul, si tu devais le refaire aujourd’hui, est-ce que tu changerais quelque chose ou tu ferais exactement pareil ?
Je ne changerais absolument rien !

Je travaille actuellement sur mon album. J'ai hâte de continuer à faire découvrir mon univers aux nouveaux arrivants comme à ceux qui me suivent depuis le début.

How did Linkin Park contact you ? How did they discovered your videos ?
So, actually, Mike & Chester apparently watch so many things that happening on the web and they would have fallen on my channel. Their manager contacted Youtube who put them in touch with Youtube France. They must have thought that I was American, because I do not speak in my videos. Youtube then send me a mail on Saturday morning to announce me that they would be in France on Monday and that they would like to make a version of their latest single with me.

What was your reaction ? What does Linkin Park mean to you ?
Linkin Park is a band that I listened to when I was a teenager. I was a big fan of their very futuristic approach to programming at the time for a rock band. I'm still a big fan of Reanimation. It was an honor for me to be called by a group of this magnitude.

You had only 48 hours to prepare the collaboration, how did you get ready in such a short time ?
48h especially during a weekend! I did not have time to completely rework an arrangement and especially we had only 45 minutes on D-Day to make the video. So I didn't think a lot, I made a very spontaneous arrangement. I wanted it to turn into "snapshot". A version that wouldn't exist elsewhere and that would stay sober.

How was the meeting with Chester and Mike ?
We talked more than we played. I was quite surprised to know that they had seen almost all my videos. I was very surprised to see people so humble, and also cool. We talked music, internet and concerts. A very good moment !

How was the shoot ? You had little time to shoot.
The lack of time was a challenge. All the pressure of the video disappeared when they heard the arrangements I wanted to make. They looked at each other, laughed and told me "This is just awesome men !! You did that in less than 48 hours ??". I was so greatful to see them happy that it gave us incredible strength. We repeated the song once and then we shot the video. There was only one catch. It was magical !

Did Mike and Chester adapt easily to your evolutionary instrument ?
They are incredibly talented and have a lot of experience. In three minutes they had understood everything. There was no problems. It was pretty crazy.

What was the return of the fans ?
I think that the fact that a small « frenchy » made a duet with a band so mythical has shadowed the rest. The people who follow me were, I feel, proud and happy enough for me. The rest ...

What impact did the video have? Did you have other proposals for collaboration ?
I had quite a lot of suggestion after all this. But again, I created this channel only for my personal pleasure. I didn't sign this channel at any Network. I don't monetize my videos. I only make with my favorite and videos with my friends artists. It's a playground and I'd like it to stay that way.
